At three you’re taught to care.

At four you’re taught to share.

By five you know to say nice things.

By six you learn to play pretend.

You sing and laugh and learn and love.

But life and words cause damage such

that kindness turns to weakness. Then

to show one grace becomes a sin.

Then fires burn and bones can break

and all we know is greed and hate.

If only we were five again

when any face could be called kin
